Atmosphere is extremely important. This helps you (and your guests) suspend reality for a short while and immerse yourself in your chosen theme. For the pirate theme, you can go as tacky and cliche as you wish, or stick to something that a real 18th century sailor would feel at home walking into. I chose for a mix of both with my bar set-up.
